70% of GP visits are related to chronic diseases. These include a range of commonly preventable health conditions such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis and arthritis.
Physical inactivity is a primary cause of most common chronic diseases. The minimum recommended amount of moderate physical activity per week is 150 minutes with the majority of the population falling short of this minimum recommendation.
Regular exercise can prevent or manage some chronic conditions:
- Cardiovascular (CV) disease– exercise reduces several CV risk factors (obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, metabolic syndrome and diabetes)
- Diabetes– exercise improves insulin sensitivity in muscle
- Back pain– exercise improves strength, endurance and muscle function, increases blood flow and nutrients to the soft tissue in the back which promotes healing and reduces stiffness
- Arthritis– exercise helps to maintain muscle strength in affected joints, reduces stiffness in the affected joints and reduces pain and fatigue.
How can we help as Exercise Physiologists?
Exercise Physiologists specialise in exercise interventions for a broad range of pathological populations. We look after persons who might be at risk of developing, or have existing, medical conditions and injuries. The aims are to restore optimal physical function, health and wellness through exercised based interventions and health education.
